EpiCor Nutritional Supplements

Frequently Asked Questions

What is EpiCor®?

EpiCor is a dried, complex fermentation product derived from a proprietary process consisting of Saccharomyces cerevisiae (brewer's yeast) and the beneficial metabolites produced during the manufacturing process.

What does EpiCor do?

Cell, animal and human studies indicate that EpiCor can help maintain a healthy immune system.* For example, it increases salivary IgA (part of the first line of defense) and increases the activity of Natural Killer (NK) cells, making them more efficient.* It also helps suppress inappropriate immune responses, thereby balancing the immune system.*

What role does the immune system play in human health?

The immune system is composed of many interdependent cell types that collectively protect the body from bacterial, parasitic, fungal and viral infections as well as from the growth of tumor cells. Since the immune system is responsible for balancing pro-inflammatory and anti-inflammatory responses, an improper immune response can lead not only to colds and influenza, but also to more than 100 health conditions that have been linked to compromised immune function such as: allergies, joint health, autoimmune conditions, cellular health, respiratory conditions and cardiovascular health.

How is the immune system impacted by intense physical activity?

Intense physical stress, such as the stress caused by long-distance running, can negatively impact the immune system. The innate immune system has the ability to adjust itself to handle the increased stress. While the body's immune helper/immune suppressor ratios typically adjust fairly quickly, the adaptive immune system can take longer to adjust.

How does EpiCor differ from other immune products?

EpiCor is not a single chemical as are many immune support products on the market, but a complex product comprised of beneficial metabolites together with vitamins, minerals, amino acids and antioxidants working together to support immune health.* We are not aware of another product containing the diversity of immune-supporting compounds as found in EpiCor.* In addition, as an antioxidant, EpiCor further supports immune health by scavenging free radicals.*

What is the difference between immune boosters and immune modulators?

An immune booster is a product or ingredient that only stimulates the immune system.

An immune modulator is a product or ingredient that balances the immune system, so that a proper response can be made depending on the need. An immune modulator allows the immune system to make the correct response to specific circumstances.

Should EpiCor be taken year-round?

EpiCor is not a drug, but a supplement intended for healthy people to support their immune systems.* EpiCor seems to particularly support the innate immune system, the body's first line of defense.* EpiCor has also been shown to positively affect allergic and inflammatory responses, therefore, it's best taken year-round for maximum benefit.*

What is the recommended dosage for EpiCor?

While there is no Recommended Daily Intake (RDI) for Epicor, the current science supporting the product suggests a daily dosage of 500 mg.  A single 500 mg capsule taken once daily is recommended for all adults.

Does EpiCor affect common cold or flu symptoms?

A recent human clinical study suggested that EpiCor reduced the incidence of cold and flu symptoms by 21% and showed a decrease in the duration of cold and flu symptoms by 14%, both statistically significant results. Study was published in Urologic Nursing, 2008, Volume 28, Number 1, p. 50-55.

Should the dosage of EpiCor be increased at onset of illness?

At the moment, there is no data to support increasing the dose of EpiCor at the onset of illness. EpiCor is designed to support a healthy immune system so that the body can better defend against invading pathogens. EpiCor is a dietary supplement and is not intended to treat or cure illnesses.

Is EpiCor safe?

EpiCor is a fermented product made through a proprietary process with the same microorganism used for thousands of years to make bread. Even so, multiple toxicological studies have been performed to show the safety of EpiCor. Also, a panel of independent experts determined that EpiCor is GRAS (Generally Recognized As Safe).

Can children take EpiCor?

Research has not been conducted with children and EpiCor. While we would have no reason to believe that EpiCor would be harmful to children, a pediatrician should be consulted prior to giving any supplement to a child. For younger children who are unable to swallow a capsule, we recommend opening up the capsule and sprinkling the contents into oatmeal or yogurt and stirring well.

Can EpiCor be taken with prescription and over-the-counter drugs?

Safety studies conducted on EpiCor suggest that it is unlikely for EpiCor to interact with over-the-counter (OTC) and prescription medications. However, as with any dietary supplement, consulting with a physician is recommended before beginning any supplement program.

Should EpiCor be taken with meals or between meals?

Either way is suitable.

Can EpiCor be taken by those suffering from an autoimmune disorder such as celiac disease?

EpiCor has only been tested with people possessing healthy immune systems. While we have no reason to believe EpiCor would be harmful to those with an autoimmune disorder, consultation with a nutritionally-aware health care provider is recommended prior to taking any supplement.

Can EpiCor cause or worsen a yeast infection?

There is no similarity between Saccharomyces cerevisiae, found abundantly in the food supply and in the air, and Candida albicans, an opportunistic yeast strain that proliferates in individuals with compromised immune systems. Also, EpiCor is pasteurized to reduce harmful microorganisms.

Does EpiCor contain any wheat, gluten, barley, rye or oats?

No.

Is EpiCor suitable for a vegetarian diet?

Yes.
